Final Fantasy XVI sold over three million copies worldwide in its first week of release.The top-down shooter was announced in 2020 and scheduled for release in 2021 before being postponed due to development issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a series of delays and testing phases, Just Cause Mobile has been officially canceled.Star Ocean: The Second Story R, the sequel, will be released in November 2023. Coming soon are releases in the company's most popular franchises, including two Dragon Quest spin-offs, Monsters: The Dark Prince and Infinity Strash, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in early 2024. So far, Square's 2023 releases have been mixed, beginning with the "lackluster" launch of Forspoken in January, followed by the well-received Octopath Traveller 2 and, finally, the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy XVI in June.Square vaguely responded to the question once more, stating that it will "refrain from speaking in specifics," but that "the strengthening of our internal development organization will be of benefit as the difficulty of developing major titles is becoming extremely high, which also has implications for development lead times." It concluded, “We hope that this reinforcement of our organization will promote the development not only of major titles but also new IPs under the new management team.” Square was also questioned about why it has "longer gaps between game releases than its peers do," as well as what the company's board thought about its future release schedule.While Square said it would "refrain from sharing information about new titles," it did say it was "considering various ideas within the company" and hoped everyone "will look forward to forthcoming announcements.”
Following the critical and commercial success of the Pixel Remasters of Final Fantasy I-VI, it was asked if there were any "plans to remaster other past titles" at the company's recent shareholder meeting ( via VGC).Square Enix is reportedly looking into remastering some of its older titles following the recent success of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster.
